Several years ago I met a single mom at my church who had a 7 year old daughter. I'm single/never married and I asked her out for coffee in an attempt to get to know her better. After about an hour of exchanging basic info.....where did you grow up, go to school, what do you do for work, etc.....I wanted to find out the story of her being a single mom. As a volunteer leader in several churches, I have known many single moms and dated a few. I don't want to judge anyone....I just want to know what happened. I asked her several poignant questions, but I did so in a kind and considerate way. So you were married now divorced? Answer: NO. You had a boyfriend who left you? NO. You were in some other situation? NO. So, I was at a loss as to what might have happened to cause her to have a child, and asked her to explain and I didn't want to embarrass her. She said the following: when I was in my mid-30s and still not married, I decided to get artificially inseminated at a sperm bank because the desire to be a mom was so great. I even got to pick the gentleman from a book of male options, although I had to sign a paper that I would never try to meet him personally. I was stunned. I had never heard of a Christian woman doing this. When I asked her more questions about how her family responded to her decision, she said they didn't approve. When I asked about when she started 'to show', what did people at church say? She said she stopped going to church during her pregnancy. All I did was ask her questions, but after our date she never returned my calls/texts and I never saw her again. My point: the church and many of it's leaders are often woefully unaware of how messed up people are, yes even Christians, and how this adversely affects the dating process. When you don't fit into their little box of answers, you're just left out. Talk about a lonely feeling. When we single men try very hard to do the right thing, are faithful, exercise wisdom, are gracious and kind, etc..... we are rejected for doing the right thing while at the same time promised a blessing for doing the right thing. God only knows how many great single guys out there go through similar experiences, but we are judged for being 'non-commital'. I would have seen her again. This is just one sign of how backwards things have become largely due to the feminist movement. And people wonder why there are so many single men?
