They often have poor impulse control too, because they have never had that role model of someone protecting them properly, so when they start to be more forceful and assertive in trying to protect themselves, they can lean into it too much and become dangerous and scary. Sociopathy develops in circumstances like this. I feel like this film is about how a child can become one when they try to stand up for themselves, finding out that she was a twin is Maria’s inciting incident because she realises there could be another version of herself and that they could have protected each other so she wouldn’t be so alone.
